Austin, Texas, USA –September 4, 2002 -- PowerLogix today announced the PowerForce Dual G4 line of processor upgrade cards for PowerMac G4s. The new PowerForce Dual G4 Series 100 and Series 133 processor upgrades will begin shipping with speeds ranging from 800MHz to 1 GHz, with faster models available later. Already the first and only company shipping single processor G4 'Apollo' upgrades for PowerMac G4s and G4 Cubes, PowerLogix continues to lead the market with the new PowerForce Dual G4. The PowerForce Dual G4 was designed along with the single processor version. "Our dual processor PowerForce G4 actually uses the same circuit board as the single processor models; we just populate the second CPU," said Marc Reviel, Director of Engineering for PowerLogix. "The goal on this project was to keep costs low and still deliver performance on par with the latest Macs. This is why we resisted the temptation to go with DDR cache, which offers zero performance advantage but significantly more cost. Instead we put that cost into a second processor," said Reviel. (See the recently published L3 Cache White Paper regarding L3 cache architecture which shows DDR cache to be no faster than much more economical SDR cache.) Speaking of DDR cache, it has recently become common knowledge that the latest PowerMac G4s, in spite of a faster bus and DDR SDRAM architecture, perform no better than previous generation models when benchmarked with identical processors. (http://www.barefeats.com.) This is also true when comparing the latest models to a PowerMac G4 upgraded with a PowerForce Dual G4. Combining a PowerForce Dual G4 card with an older PowerMac G4 can actually give greater CPU performance than the latest 2002 PowerMacs announced last month, for significantly less expense. This preserves the user's investment in existing equipment. All PowerForce Dual models include 2MB of L3 cache, which is twice what Apple includes on their newest Dual 867 MHz and Dual 1 GHz models. This means an older PowerMac will outperform the latest Apple models, when comparing equivalent clock speeds. The PowerForce Dual G4 takes full advantage of the symmetric multiprocessing capabilities of Mac OS X, so all applications will benefit from the higher performance provided by the second processor. Mac OS X distributes tasks to each processor as needed, using one processor for each task and working simultaneously instead of serially. In this manner, the time to complete two tasks can often be halved. The PowerForce Dual G4 thrives on processor intensive tasks like video (Final Cut Pro) and image creation (PhotoShop) and makes short work of other tasks, like ripping MP3s. The PowerForce Dual G4 processor upgrade is a single circuit board with two CPUs and 2MB of L3 cache for each CPU. The user simply removes the original processor card and installs the PowerForce Dual G4 card in its place. It installs easily in just a few minutes by following the included instructions. Installation is about as simple as installing a PCI card. Model___________________Original Clock Speed *PowerMac G4 'AGP Graphics' ---350, 400, 450, 500 MHz PowerMac G4 'Gigabit Ethernet' ---Single 400, Dual 450 or 500 MHz **PowerMac G4 Cube ---450, 500 MHz The PowerForce G4 Series 133 upgrade cards are compatible with the following Model___________________Original Clock Speed PowerMac G4 'Digital Audio' ---466, 533, 667, 733, Dual 533 MHz PowerMac G4 'QuickSilver' ---733, 867, Dual 800 MHz PowerMac G4 'QuickSilver 2002' ---800, 933, Dual 1GHz *Early models of AGP have a bridge chip that is not compatible with dual processors. We recommend the PowerForce G4 Series 100 (single processor) for those machines. The Dual G4 Series 100 Product Notice page has instructions on how to determine if an AGP machine is dual compatible. **The PowerMac G4 Cube has a lower capacity power supply and therefore we conservatively recommend installing at most a Dual 800MHz. As Motorola introduces faster processors with lower core voltages, this recommended clock speed limit may increase. The kit for the Cube includes a high-output fan which does mean the Cube is no longer silent but the trade-off is significantly more speed. Cube owners who prefer silent operation should opt for a single processor upgrade up to 1GHz. Availability: PowerForce Dual G4 models will be available within 2-3 weeks. We expect very high demand for these cards so we recommend resellers place advance orders with our distributors. Estimated Street Pricing: PowerForce Dual G4 Series 100 @ 800MHz $799 PowerForce Dual G4 Series 100 @ 1 GHz $1199 PowerForce Dual G4 Series 133 @ 867MHz $799 PowerForce Dual G4 Series 133 @ 1 GHz $1199 PowerLogix manufactures innovative products like the PowerForce, iForce and BlueChip processor upgrades for maximum performance from second generation and newer Apple Power Macs and clones.
