The PowerForce G4 Single CPU processor card (along with
its closely related cousin, the PowerForce
Dual G4) is the most advanced, highest performance single
CPU card available for any PowerMac.
In 2002, PowerLogix was the first to ship G4 745x processors
for PowerMacs, and now is the first to ship the latest high-performance,
low-power 7457 PowerPC. The 7457 draws about 40% less peak
power than an equivalent speed 7455.
Note: depending on chip pricing and availability we may
continue to offer 7451 and 7455-based cards.
The PowerForce G4 Single CPU card includes 2MB of L3 cache,
and there are models 100 MHz bus and 133 MHz bus PowerMac
G4s. This is a great way to preserve the investment in your
existing Mac.
We currently support the following computers:
100 MHz Bus:
PowerMac G4 AGP,
G4 Gigabit
Ethernet, G4 Cube.
133 MHz Bus:
PowerMac G4 Digital
Audio, G4 Quicksilver and
G4 Quicksilver

Unique Design
The PowerForce G4 Single CPU has a three phase power supply
that runs at 1.2MHz, five times faster than the power supply
driving the original CPU. This means it can react to the
processor's varying power requirements much more quickly.
It's the first three phase power supply ever used on a Mac
processor card.
This means cleaner power, better transient response, lower
heat, and more reliability. The power supply is also very
small and compact, low profile, with no huge inductors or
other large components taking up space. And space is very
important for small places, like inside a PowerMac G4 Cube.
A Perfect Complement to your Cube
Speaking of the Cube, the PowerForce G4 provides the best
performance of any CPU card while also generating the lowest
amount of heat.
The Cube originally shipped with convection cooling only
(no fan) and the Cube design is very limited with regards
to airflow on some of the components, so it is important
when upgrading the Cube to get the lowest power (therefore
the lowest heat) CPU card. PowerLogix is the only supplier
of the lowest power G4 PowerPC chip, the 7457.
PowerLogix also offers the Clear
PowerCube enclosure which provides additional cooling
if you want to upgrade your Cube with both CPU and with
a higher performance graphics card.
We include a video to aid with the installation process
with units that ship for the Cube.
Benchmarks:
For complete benchmark reports, check out the PowerLogix Real
World Benchmarks or the reviews on xlr8yourmac.com and macsales.com.
Compatibility:
7451/7455-based upgrades require MacOS 9.2.1, 9.2.2, or
Mac OS X 10.1 (or higher.)
7457-based upgrades require MacOS 9.2.2, MacOS X 10.2.8
or 10.3 Panther.
Classic in OS X is fully compatible. PowerLogix also includes
a firmware update so the system properly recognizes the
7457 processor. This firmware update is required for 7457
use (but is easily reversible.)
One note of clarification: if your PowerMac G4 came from
Apple as a dual processor machine, it has a single card
with two processors on it. The Apple card is removed and
the PowerForce G4 card replaces the Apple card and *both*
CPU's. 1.2It is not possible to install two PowerForce G4
cards to replace the two processors in your machine; only
one card is required. |
